Blackout - Jena 6

Submitted by Shauno

September 20th, 2007

Let it be known to begin that this is NOT directed at all of the thousands people who showed support and solidarity for the Jena 6 today (this is the what's NOT good page). The whole situation is what's NOT good.  As we showed our support by attending one of many rallies and gatherings in our local areas, those that went to Louisiana from all over the U.S. and folks who wore black to show unity against injustice (this particular rant is focused on the last one),  There are many (too many) people who don't know even the least or they know and stay oblivious to what is going on with this and many more of the Black communities and societies issues in general.

When I heard on the various radio shows and through email chains, posts, etc. that to show support for the Jena 6, dress in all black, I thought it would be interesting to see how many people I noticed, especially Black folk, dressed in all black.  You know, people in the street.  Now what I'm talking about is something very simple that's  just a statement regardless of religion, location, race, etc.  I am fully aware that we live in a mass media, entertainment-hypnotized society of mental slaves but I thought, "Wow, whatever you're doing, do it in Black. Simplistic genius."  Unfortunately, as I walked through the streets of NYC today with my black on, people are just as blissfully ignorant as I thought they were.

Importance of a Record Deal

Submitted By Shauno

February 25, 2007

The title would better be stated "The Lack of Importance".  I talk to and hear so many MC's whose lives revolve around the prospect of obtaining a record deal.  From the door, this is not to say that obtaining a record deal is a bad thing totally.  My problem is that many artists do not educate themselves of the business end, outside of "I wanna get paid!"

As the dynamics of the industry change, there are things artists can do independently that will ensure they are more attractive for the right deal IF they choose to go that route.  For instance, in the past, record companies were key to getting that high quality studio sound, without spending mega dollars to complete an album, duplicate, market, distribute, etc.  This is before technology demand forced prices down and of course the internet.

“Snap your fingers….Lean wit it, Rock wit it”

Lil and young explains it all

Submitted by Non-D

March 1, 2007

In this age of “hip-hop” so many styles, trends, lingo come and go (which isn’t a bad thing fyi).  One of the newest craze for some reason is the “Snap Music Revolution”.  It all started with the laffy taffy silliness, which wouldn’t be a bad thing if it remained a single song, or a track or two.  However, in came Dem Franchise Boys, and whoever else came in to the game from a silly dance and a snap replacing a snare.  The comical quote from these “artist” is that they actually call it a new genre of “hip-hop” because of the silly dance and a snap replacing a snare.    Plus, they are telling us what to do “Lean wit it, Rock wit it….Shake your Laffy Taffy…Walk it out”, Do me a favor; order me to do something more complex than this.

NEW - Hip Hop Isn't Dead But...

Submitted by That Nigga Jhamal

July 6, 2008

I turned on the Tv and I happened to catch MTv’s Annual Who’s the Hottest Mc Now show. The show features people whose word Mtv seems to consider relevant in the industry (mostly MTv employees). So the show starts off with the board putting Andre 3000 in @ #10 and T.I. in @ #9 which after a few minutes of discussion they decide to switch (a valid discussion even though nether released a album to date this yr.). Then comes the most bizarre conversation where one member of the group discusses the fact that maybe..

RESPONSIBILITY

(ANY TAKERS?)

Submitted by That Nigga Jhamal

December 15, 2007

I’ve noticed that we as people are quick to blame circumstances, excuse me cop out to a circumstance. Be it a word (nigga, bitch, ho), a person (other than self), a location (environment). Instead of accepting responsibility for the things they do....

We're working on an in-depth look at injustice in Amerikkka (you know What's NOT Good had to chime in).  Personally, after the Sean Bell verdict, I was speechless but still not really surprised.  In the meantime (while we gather our rage), this is the latest in the all-out war on Black men and the total disregard of civil rights.  Video of 3 men pulled out of a car and viciously beaten by 15 Philadelphia police.
